The Glide project began in 1998, with the idea for a
speculative fiction, first called The Death Dancers, later changed to The
Maze Game. Megabytes of
notes, an outline for the novel, and the first 100 pages were completed in
the summer of ’98. In the
process of getting the ideas down, a visual language, invented and used by
characters in the novel came to light, so I spent some time drawing the
symbols of the language, translating them, and starting to see how they
worked to generate meaning. The
language is called Glide, the name of the people who created it.
The language both lifted itself out of the story, then, once more
fully described, fed back in, as it became obvious that it was integral to
the story on many levels. The
mazes of The Maze Game are constructed of the signs of the language.
